THE SIXFOLD BUDDHAHOOD

【鈔曰】六,顯因果之事相;即,顯佛性之理體。全性起修,故言六;全修在性,故言即。何名為六即?一者、理即。二者、名字即。三者、觀行即。四者、相似即。五、分證即。六、究竟即。普潤大師有六即佛頌曰:
一、理即

動靜理全是

行藏事盡非

冥冥隨物去

杳杳不知歸

1 | Budhahood in Principle
In stillness and in motion, the great principle is embodied.
Yet our actions and behavior always run to the contrary.
Blind and mindless in our worldly pursuit,
Hazy and clueless we know not our destination.
【鈔曰】動靜理全是者,謂一動一靜,約理全是佛性也。行藏事盡非者,行藏,即動靜也。由不達萬法唯心,故所作事動靜約事全不合理也。冥冥隨物去者,謂佛性之體,隨六塵而流轉也。杳杳不知歸者,無有覺照之功,故不知歸也。

二、名字即

方聽無生曲

始聞不死歌

今知當體是

翻恨自蹉跎
2 | Buddhahood in Name
The tune of the unborn, the song of the deathless
Have just been heard and learned.
Realizing the whole truth just as it is,
You cry, “How I have lived my life in vain!”
【鈔曰】方聽無生曲,始聞不死歌者,悟得佛性之理也,佛性本不生滅也。今知當體是者,現在當體,苦即法身,惑即般若,業即解脫也。翻恨自蹉跎者,翻恨理即位中,行藏事盡非也。

三、觀行即

念念照常理

心心息幻塵

遍觀諸法性

無假亦無真
3 | Buddhahood in Contemplative Practice
Be mindful of the ever-present principle each moment;
Clear the dust of delusion in every thought.
Contemplate all aspects of the Dharma realm:
The nature of all things is neither real nor unreal.
【鈔曰】念念照常理者,明觀照之功也。常理,即不生不滅法身理也。心心息幻塵者,幻塵,即五住地惑也,謂正當照常理時,五住便息而不起也。遍觀諸法性者,謂二邊法性也。無假亦無真者,全體中道,故曰非假非真也。

四、相似即

四住雖先落

六塵未盡空

眼中猶有翳

空裏見花紅
4 | Buddhahood in Resemblance
The four entrenchments are cleared,
Yet the six pollutants are not emptied.
The disease is still in your eyes ––
Seeing flowers bloom in empty space!
【鈔曰】四住,謂見思二惑,見為一住,思為三住。先落,謂法執後斷,我執先斷也。六塵未空者,法執未忘也。由法執故,故曰眼中有翳,空裏見花紅也。

五、分證即

豁爾心開悟

湛然一切通

窮源猶未盡

尚見月朦朧
5 | Buddhahood in Progressive Realization
Suddenly, our mind has awakened;
With clarity, the nature of all things is understood.
The ultimate source has yet to be reached;
A tinge of haze still hangs over the moon.
【鈔曰】豁爾心開悟者,以中道觀智,豁破無明一品也。湛然一切通者,六塵空也。窮源未盡者,還有四十一品無明未盡,故曰尚見月朦朧也。

六、究竟即

從來真是妄

今日妄皆真

但復本時性

更無一法新
6 | Ultimate Buddhahood
Before, all that appeared real were illusions.
Now, all illusions are part of reality.
Just return everything to its original nature;
There is nothing new whatsoever.
【鈔曰】從來,指前五位也。真是妄者,三德之真,全成三障之妄也,如水成冰也。今日者,指今究竟位也。妄皆真者,三障之妄全成三德之真也。但復本時性者,復還其本時之佛性也。更無一法新者,非從冰外更得水也。

【鈔曰】此六即義,四教皆判,而有權實不同。前三教是權,唯圓教是實。藏教但六而不即,二諦不相即故。通教雖二諦相即,而不能即佛,不達中道故。別教雖談中道,而不能六即佛,但中不即二邊故。唯圓教六即佛義全,故但約圓教,判六即佛義也。即而常六,如冰水之不同。六而常即,如溼性之體一也。
